Hawkins is pleased to announce the arrival of HIROX RX 100 microscopes to five of our UK laboratories. These microscopes are renowned for their powerful and advanced performance and represent a significant investment and commitment in our provision of materials investigation to our clients.
We have invested in this new state-of-the-art technology to expand our ability to examine exhibits both large and small. The extendible, cantilever arm will allow large objects, such as washing machines or car parts, to be viewed, which is often a challenge in many labs where only small sample sizes are possible.
Â
These new microscopes provide up to 5000 times magnification and we will be able to view and scan samples in 3D. This will help us to decipher thread profiles, indentation marks and crack penetration depths. Furthermore, we can now measure the most minute witness marks both in 2D and in 3D, which is particularly beneficial when studying olive witness marks on compression joints, or wear on electrical contacts.
Â
The team were so enthused that there was a queue of samples (from electronics to structural components) lined up awaiting examination, to probe the secrets behind their failures .

We look forward to being able to support our reporting with videos and other interactive media, to help our clients to visualise particularly difficult samples and help to explain why they failed.
