We are pleased to introduce Civil and Structural Engineer, Simon Bateman, who joins our London office.
Graduating from Cambridge University with a first-class degree in Civil, Structural & Environmental Engineering, Simon brings over 13 years of design experience. Upon completion of his degree, Simon joined Arup on a placement as a Structural Engineer within their Advanced Technology & Research team. During this time, he carried out specialist consulting engineering work, including building defects and building damage assessments, including for the Thames Tideway Tunnel.
Simon continued his career in Arup’s Buildings London group where he gained experience in the design of a wide variety of structural typologies, including reinforced concrete frames, post-tensioned concrete, structural steelwork and concrete basements. He also worked on several projects with structural timber, including modern techniques such as cross-laminated timber (CLT), and steel-timber and concrete-timber hybrids. Simon also led the structural design of a major refurbishment and lab retrofit scheme, where he provided advice on the load capacity and vibration performance of the existing and proposed floors. Simon’s structural design experience spans a wide variety of other sectors such as residential, office, leisure, fit-out and sculpture. His CV includes several award-winning projects like the eye-catching Coal Drops Yard in London.
Simon’s work on timber and refurbishment projects has equipped him with valuable insights into contemporary building trends, such as moisture control in timber and defects in existing frames undergoing refurbishment. He has worked on both traditionally procured and design-build projects, serving on both client and contractor sides. It is a pleasure to welcome Simon to the team.
