Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS): How Do They Respond in a Collision?

Advanced driver assistance systems refer to technologies designed to assist drivers in safely operating a vehicle.  Given that most road accidents result from human error, ADAS aim to automate, adapt, and enhance vehicle technology for improved safety and driving experience.

ADAS include Autonomous Emergency Braking Systems (‘AEBS’) and Lane Support Systems such as Lane Departure Warning (‘LDW’), among others.  As ADAS continues to evolve, more advanced systems are becoming common, often with the abilities to facilitate more advanced levels of automated driving.

Mechanical Engineer, Robert Taylor provides an overview of the different types of ADAS and how each may respond in the event of a collision. He takes time to answer questions such as  “What does the data tell us?” and “What can be determined from published literature and test results?”
