Since graduating in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Warwick, Stuart has pursued a career in safety and risk management. His first position was as a Safety and Risk Management Consultant at AEA Technology (now known as ESR Technology), completing safety studies, within onshore and offshore assets in the Oil & Gas industry. These studies included design assurance (HAZOP, HAZID and SIL), fire and explosion risk assessments, consequence modelling, human factors and failure modes and effects analysis. Results from these assessments allowed clients to evaluate the risks arising from their sites, to support design decisions ensuring compliance with legislative requirements and reducing the risk of major accident hazards. During this time, Stuart spent 5 years based in Abu Dhabi, UAE, serving the local Oil & Gas market.
From 2010 to 2020, Stuart was involved as a HSE Engineer on several large Oil & Gas projects. These included: working for KBR on the Gorgon LNG project based in Australia, working for Total on the Yamal LNG Project based in Russia, working for Fluor on the Al-Zour Refinery project in Kuwait, and working for Novatek on the Arctic LNG 2 project. He was responsible for the HSE design activities during the FEED and EPC phases and ensuring compliance with international codes and national standards. He would participate in design assurance workshops (HAZOP, HAZID and SIL) and preparing or reviewing HSE design documentation.
Stuart began studying for the NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, balancing work and study for three years, before completing in 2021.
In 2020 Stuart joined WT Consultancy as a Health and Safety Consultant specialising in the setting, developing, and auditing of Health and Safety Management Systems. This includes legal compliance, policy, arrangements, risk assessments, training, inspections, accident reporting, and accident investigation. This he applied across a range of sectors including agriculture, retail, manufacturing and services.
In 2022 Stuart joined Hawkins, as the Health and Safety Manager, based in the Bristol Office. He currently serves as the HSE and Facilities Manager. Stuart also undertakes Expert Witness work, particularly on matters pertaining to Health & Safety, Manual Handling and Oil & Gas.
