Get a Grip:
The Investigation of Slips & Falls
Presented by Dr Paul Lemon
Thursday 8th May 2025 at 9.30am BST
Pedestrian falls are the single most common cause of major injuries in the workplace, and are a leading cause of injuries across a wide range of non-workplace environments. As a result, claims are very common, and many are considerable, given the severity of the injuries that can result.
Paul will look at the methods that should be used to investigate slipping incidents, and will consider the many pitfalls that can lead to incomplete or inaccurate slipping incident investigations.
When Audible Warning Alarms Cause Injury
Presented by Ros Lambert-Porter
Thursday 15th May 2025 at 9.30am BST
Whether or not an audible warning alarm is effective is dependent on its ability to draw the attention of the listener. If that alarm is not sufficiently distinctive, people can suffer serious injuries. Conversely, if that alarm is too loud, the alarm itself has potential to cause injury.
Ros will define the characteristics of effective audible alarms, where they might fail, and how these failures can lead to catastrophic outcomes. She will also explore the case of Haesel McDonald vs Indigo Sun where a warning alarm was found to have caused injury.
Understanding Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS)
Presented by Dr Andrew Peplow
Thursday 29th May 2025 at 9.30am BST
Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) is a debilitating condition caused by prolonged exposure to vibration, typically from the use of power tools or machinery in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and forestry. This presentation aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of HAVS, including its causes and symptoms.
Pedestrian Protection Through Vehicle Design
Presented by Adam Barrow
Thursday 12th June 2025 at 9.30am BST
Vehicle design plays a crucial role in preventing and mitigating injuries during road traffic collisions. Adam provides an overview of the development of pedestrian protection measures in vehicle design, including:
- The principles and challenges of pedestrian protection
- How vehicle design evolves with, and sometimes leverages, regulation
- An overview of the technologies deployed in vehicle design to protect pedestrians
Investigation of Electric Shock Injuries
Presented by Richard Heath
Thursday 26th June 2025 at 9.30am BST
In our every day lives we interact with electrical equipment frequently, often without thinking about it. With good product and system design, construction, use and maintenance, the electrical systems and equipment we use do not present a hazard. But when those principles go wrong, they can result in electric shocks. The resulting effects can vary widely, from an ‘unpleasant tingle’, through life-changing burn injuries, to fatal shock (electrocution).
Richard will review the basic concepts of electric shocks, how they occur, and how electric shock personal injury cases are investigated.
We look forward to presenting for you.
