For the second year in a row, Hawkins sponsored and presented at the annual 26th Technical Forum – Philippine Coal Plant User’s Group.

Materials Expert, Stephen Rowbotham delivered his presentation ‘Boiler Tube Life: Coal-Fired Power Plants – Challenges Faced in the Energy Transition Era’, discussing how the Philippines’s power supply is dominated by the coal generation sector, and is likely to do so for years to come. He explained that changes in operation will occur as renewable energy sources come online, as part of the government’s targets to reduce emissions, and these will affect the damage mechanisms found in critical plant components.

His presentation highlighted how the Philippines can use the knowledge from other countries in managing the energy transition to maintain generating asset and grid stability. He explained in particular how boiler tubes can be affected by these changes, and what mitigating steps plant operators can implement to minimise unplanned outages.

Stephen is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining with specialist expertise in the power sector. Stephen investigates incidents in renewable and thermal power plants on behalf of loss adjusters, insurance companies and owners/operators. His experience includes both static and rotating components, condition assessment of gas and steam turbines, and outage support operations.

Stephen was joined by Mechanical Engineer, Divyeruthra Muniandy and Electrical Engineer, Albert Richardson. Divyeruthra specialises in petrochemical incidents (fires, mechanical failures, and contamination) and fire and explosion investigations within marine, industrial, commercial and domestic premises. Albert, brings over three decades of experience to the Hawkins team, and is recognised for his expertise in generators and high-voltage (HV) motors, primarily focusing on power generation and distribution.

The Hawkins power and energy team comprises of engineers and scientists from design, consultancy and operational backgrounds, across a range of technologies who truly understand the full depth and breadth of the issues which can lead to a failure. If you would like one of our power team to present to your organisation, or investigate a case, feel free to get in touch with us.
