Chartered Engineer, Nick Ashby, presented at The Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters Claims Professional Conference.
Nick’s presentation: ‘Infrastructure – Managing Ageing Assets’ discussed the impact that ageing and usage have on infrastructure and included a detailed case study of a power plant.
Nick began his presentation by explaining what is meant by ‘infrastructure’ and gave an overview of UK electricity and gas infrastructure. He explained that generation and demand must match, at least until ‘Grid Scale’ battery storage becomes available. If a power station suffers an outage, the opportunity to sell electricity for that period is lost forever.
He discussed how ageing can affect the integrity and efficiency of the assets, influencing both operating risks and insurance claims. As electricity is a true commodity, the only measure of quality is that it is available when you need it at the right voltage and frequency. Therefore, when a power station experiences an issue, it can severely impact the quality of life for consumers, and damage the business operations of service providers.
Nick also discussed the tools that are necessary to successfully manage power plant assets and provided an overview of some low-carbon and alternative technologies.
Nick was joined at the conference by Business Development Managers, Graeme Drysdale and Dr Andrew Moncrieff, who were available to respond to any questions from delegates at the Hawkins stand.
Nick is a Chartered Engineer, specialising in engineering and fire and explosion investigations in industrial, commercial, and domestic premises.
