Former firefighter and Principal Associate, Nick Carey, gave a compelling presentation in Pula, Croatia at the Conference on Fire Safety at Sea. The event was attended by 150 delegates within the shipping and marine industry from across the globe.
Nick’s presentation Containership Fires and the Difficulties of Fighting Fires while at Sea discussed the issues caused by cargo fires when in transit, how they can be tackled and what can be done to prevent them. Nick presented his findings on the MV ER Kobe, a large containership fire involving three separate containers from the same shipper. He explained how cohesion and teamwork of the various parties involved helped to resolve the incident, which occurred 8 miles from the port, and showcased the severity of the fire with photos of the 30-40m high flames. Following his presentation, Nick met with key individuals from the industry, who said how much they appreciated seeing a case which explained the effects of intentional misdeclaration of cargo and how a fire incident was resolved at sea.
Following a 27-year career in the fire service, Nick joined Hawkins in 2012. As well as investigating fires on board container ships, he also investigates bulk carrier, research vessel and yacht fires. He has provided firefighting advice for various types of vessels at sea and in ports, and has also provided expert testimony in several legal proceedings. Due to Nick’s extensive experience in fire investigation, he was recently asked to chair the writing group for the now published judicial primer “Fire Investigation – A Primer for Courts.”
