Callum Hogan is a digital forensic expert based in our Manchester office. He presented to clients and colleagues at our recent client evening receptions in Manchester, Belfast and London where he shared details of the type of work that he undertakes, including examples of the different devices and data types that he examines, as well as sharing some of his case studies.
We caught up with Callum to understand more about his line of work, the drivers behind his passion for digital forensics, and a peek into what life is like outside the world of forensics.
How did you get into your chosen field / What drew you to this field?
I entered the realm of digital forensics after my secondary school IT teacher introduced me to the emerging field. Balancing a childhood dream of becoming a police officer with a love for IT, I found the perfect blend in digital forensics. University studies culminated in a first-class degree, complemented by a year-long industrial placement. This academic success, coupled with an engaging practical experience, solidified my passion, and laid the foundation for a fulfilling career.
What attributes do you consider important for a successful forensic investigation career?
Meticulous attention to detail, analytical thinking, and a commitment to staying updated on industry trends and evolving technology are vital. As my field may give me access to highly sensitive data, being ethical, maintaining integrity, and handling sensitive information responsibly all contribute to my professional credibility.
And for any investigator, digital or otherwise, the ability to collaborate with legal teams and explain complex information in a clear and succinct way for the recipient, helps them to make the right decisions on their cases.
What is the most interesting case that you have worked on?
Each case presents its own complexities, making it difficult to single out the most interesting. However, cases involving intricate digital trails, complex cyber threats, innovative investigative techniques, and overseas travel tend to captivate me. The dynamic nature of digital forensics ensures that every case brings unique challenges and opportunities for learning and professional growth.
What is the most challenging case that you have been involved with?
Cases involving incidents with children are undoubtedly among the most challenging. The gravity of these situations requires a delicate balance between thorough investigation and emotional resilience. Ensuring justice while protecting the well-being of those involved demands a high level of professionalism, empathy, and a steadfast commitment to the ethical principles of Digital Forensics.
“Knowing that my work aids in delivering justice and closure for victims and their families highlights the importance and impact of digital forensics in the pursuit of truth and accountability”
What makes you proud in your role as a forensic investigator?
My proudest achievements lie in successfully providing crucial digital evidence that play a pivotal role in criminal investigations. Contributing to the resolution of serious offences brings a profound sense of accomplishment. Knowing that my work aids in delivering justice and closure for victims and their families highlights the importance and impact of digital forensics in the pursuit of truth and accountability.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
Staying ahead of rapidly evolving technology and cyber threats poses an ongoing challenge. The dynamic nature of digital forensics requires continuous learning to ensure proficiency with the latest tools and methodologies, and adds an extra layer of complexity to the role.
What’s the biggest misconception people have about your line of work?
The most common misconception about my work is the belief that it solely involves ‘hacking’ or intrusive activities. In reality, my role is centred around legally acquiring, analysing, and presenting electronic evidence in a meticulous and ethical manner. It is about following strict protocols to uncover digital traces for legal purposes, to ensure the integrity of the investigative process. I would also stress that it is not like what you see in TV series or films!
What advice would you give to somebody setting out on their career to be a forensic investigator?
My advice is to cultivate a strong foundation in all things technological. Seek formal education in digital forensics, gain practical experience through placements, and stay current with industry developments. Embrace continuous learning, as technology evolves rapidly.
Develop meticulous attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills, and join relevant communities to network with other professionals in the field.
Where do you see the industry going in the future?
I anticipate that the industry will evolve in response to advancing technology and emerging cyber threats. Artificial intelligence and machine learning will likely play a more significant role than they currently do in automating routine tasks and analysing vast amounts of data. With the increasing prevalence of encrypted communication and sophisticated cyber attacks, the field may see a greater emphasis on developing advanced decryption techniques. Collaboration between digital forensics experts and other cybersecurity professionals will become even more crucial. Additionally, the industry may witness the implementation of stricter regulations to address privacy concerns and ensure ethical practices in handling digital evidence.
Both your professionalism and your passion for your field shine through. Tell us more about Callum, outside of work.

What’s your guilty pleasure?
Lying on the couch, whilst eating great food, accompanied by my British Shorthair cat, Pearl.
What’s the top destination on your must-visit list and why?
Cape Town, South Africa. My mum lived there before I was born so I would love to visit her previous home and learn more about the history. Plus, I would really love to hike to the top of Table Mountain, as well as see the penguins that roam the streets of Simon’s Town!
What’s one song you have completely memorised?
Fairytale of New York by The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl.
What’s the most unusual fact you know?
It is impossible to hum while holding your nose. Go on, I dare you to try it!
